I remember Dobecka

By Edward Stengel, 7/8/2008

Your e-mail was posted in 2004, and it's now July
2008. I just happened to do a "google search" of
my old company in Soc Trang, Vietnam. I was in
the 221st Aviation Company from May 1968 to May
1969. I remember Dobecka. He was in my company,
and he got there after I did. I didn't know him
too well, but I remember him. He was a big, good
looking guy. That's about all I can tell you. It's
now 40 years later, and I doubt that any of us look
the same anymore. Good luck if you're trying to
find him.

I am not sure this is the same John Dobecka...but I believe it is. If so, he passed away this evening. Has had tremendous health issues for approximately 6 years...but wasn't the kind of man to complain. We referred to him as 'BIG JOHN'......one of the most COURAGEOUS men I have ever known. A REMARKABLE FRIEND TO SO MANY and a Loving Husband and Dad. This man was a 'GIVER'......he enjoyed life and he enjoyed PEOPLE! He was active in our community doing a lot of charity work. There aren't enough GOOD WORDS in the world to describe him....COURAGEOUS, HONORABLE, BRAVE, CARING, GIVING, and LOYAL!!!
If this is not the same man.....then I have given someone else a pretty darn good EULOGY and John would be PROUD and find it VERY FUNNY!!! We are all going to miss this SHINING STAR!!!
Our loss here is ABSOLUTELY HEAVEN'S GAIN!!!
God Bless, Cindy Barnes

Big John Dobecka

By Billy Faught, 5/9/2009

I'm not sure if y'all are talking about John Dobecka from Coppell, TX (North Texas area). If so, Big John passed away on Wednesday May 6th from bleeding in the brain. The funeral was today (Sat 5/9/09) and many attended. His Vietnam record and stories were told and I assure you the attendees that didn't know were appreciative of his service. His parents are my neighbors and I've known John for over 20 years. He NEVER talked about his exploits in 'Nam and just wanted to be Big John. He had a great life, touched so many folks, and again, was loved by all. Say a prayer for the family, they miss him greatly.
